Templates are the building blocks of your Workflow. Each Template is a custom framework that governs what information people capture and track when working on improvement. Some common Templates are Tasks, Just Do Its, Charts, Projects, and OIs.

When working with your Items in KaiNexus, you have a lot of flexibility and customization options when it comes to designing the layout of your Templates. Changing your Templates’ layout allows you to better organize and visualize how the information is displayed when a user views an Item of that Template Type.

In addition to dividing your Custom Layout Template into multiple sections, you can also choose to add or remove some additional tabs on the Template. This allows you to organize the information captured on your Template, not just through different panels, but through different tabs as well. The ability to hide unnecessary tabs on your Template can help guide your users towards a more intuitive experience when they work with Items submitted into KaiNexus.

Where are the tabs on an Item?

An Item's tabs can be found near the top of the Item's Work Panel. Clicking each one will switch the Work Panel to that tab, displaying the panels and information configured to appear on it.

Default tabs

A Standard Layout Template will have the following tabs:

  • [Template Name]: Contains all of the Item's details, including its Fields and Attributes, Team, Dates, comments, and Timeline.
  • Resolution: Contains the Resolution panel and any of the Item's Resolution data. The tab will only appear if Resolutions have been enabled for this Template.
  • Comments: Contains the Comments panel and any Comments that have been added to this Item. This tab may be replaced by or appear in addition to a Notes tab (containing a Notes panel and any Notes that have been added to this Item) and/or an Updates tab (containing an Updates panel and any Updates that have been added to this Item), depending on how this Template was configured.
  • Projects: Contains a list of all of the Projects — Items that are part of the "Projects" Workflow — that have been nested under this Item. This tab can be renamed and the default filters changed so that a different list of nested Items is included, even on Standard Layout Templates.
  • Improvements: Contains a list of all of the Improvements — Items that are part of the "Improvements" Workflow — that have been nested under this Item. This tab can be renamed and the default filters changed so that a different list of nested Items is included, even on Standard Layout Templates.
  • Incidents: Contains a list of all of the Incidents — Items that are part of the "Incidents" Workflow — that have been nested under this Item. This tab can be renamed and the default filters changed so that a different list of nested Items is included, even on Standard Layout Templates.
  • Tasks: Contains a list of all of the Tasks — Items that are part of the "Tasks" Workflow — that have been nested under this Item. This tab can be renamed and the default filters changed so that a different list of nested Items is included, even on Standard Layout Templates.
  • Charts: Contains a list of all of the Charts — Items that are part of the "Charts" Workflow — that have been nested under this Item. This tab can be renamed and the default filters changed so that a different list of nested Items is included, even on Standard Layout Templates.
  • Timeline: Contains the Timeline panel and an audit trail that keeps track of how the Item has changed over time and who was responsible for each change.
  • Fishbone: Contains the Item's Fishbone Diagram. This tab will only appear on Standard Layout Templates if Fishbone has been enabled for this Template and a Fishbone Diagram has been added to this Item.

A Custom Layout Template will typically have one more default tab:

  • Other: Contains several key panels, such as the Team, Dates, Links, and Files panels, and, if they're enabled for this Template, the Voting, Time Tracking, and Scores panels.

If you're working with a Custom Layout Template, you can work with your Customer Success Manager to add additional tabs or remove any unnecessary ones!

Adding tabs to a Template

You can have up to 5 Custom Layout tabs on your Template. Within each of these tabs, you customize the design to your liking. This means defining the number of sections, the number of columns within each section, the panels displayed within each section, and even the fields that appear within each panel.

Removing tabs from a Template

With so many options to choose from with your Templates, this can lead to certain options that may cause confusion or some tabs that may be underutilized. For those reasons, it may be more helpful to hide those tabs from your Custom Layout Template. You can remove any of the following default tabs from your template:

  • Any of the Nested Item List tabs
  • The Resolution tab
  • The Comments, Updates, and/or Notes tab(s)
  • The Timeline tab
  • The Fishbone tab
  • The Other tab

Two Line OfieYour Customer Success Manager will work with you to make sure that any information that would normally only be found on one of these tabs is added to another tab before you hide it!
