Common Board Designs

Board Design: Bottleneck

One of the most common Boards built and used by our customers is a basic Bottleneck Board.

A Bottleneck Board is useful for understanding if there are problems or barriers in the continuous improvement cycle. It also gives insight into how engaged the leaders are across the entire organization. Mostly meant for continuous improvement leaders, this Board is set up so that you have a process to see that organizational leaders are engaged with their Improvements and Projects, as well as updating and completing Projects and Improvements in a timely manner.

How is the Board built out?

  • Bottleneck Boards often have a four column layout

  • A Location filter is often included. Typically, the default Location is set to “User’s Current Location” (including the Location & below).

If the people who will be accessing the Board need to quickly check on the health of the entire organization, setting a default Location may not be necessary.

What Cards are included?

Our customers typically include the following Cards, although you can configure the Cards to reflect the precise interests of your team.

  • Requiring Assignment (7+ Days)

This Card displays any Improvements which were submitted more than a week ago.

These Improvements need to be assigned as soon as possible so that work on them can commence.

  • Stagnant (30+ Days)

This Card displays any active or overdue Improvements which have not been updated in more than thirty days.

Leaders should make sure that work is still being done on these Improvements and remind their teams of the importance of keeping improvement information up-to-date in KaiNexus.

  • Severely Overdue (30+ Days)

This Card displays any Improvements which have been overdue for more than thirty days.

The people responsible for these Improvements may need to be coached on the importance of completing Improvements on time.

  • Requiring Approval (7+ Days)

This Card displays any Improvements which have been waiting for the Assigner to approve their Resolutions for more than a week.

The Assigner may need to be coached on the importance of prompt feedback.

  • Overdue Projects (7+ Days)

This Card displays any Projects which have been overdue for more than a week.

Their Facilitators may need to be coached on the importance of completing Projects on time.

Deferred items are those which have been evaluated by leadership, but no decision has yet been made as to whether or not it should be implemented. These items need to be returned to at a later date and reevaluated.

  • Up for Review

This Card displays Improvements which have been scheduled for review at some point between the last thirty days and the next thirty days.
