Mismatched Shared Data Series & Chart Row Types

When working with Charts in KaiNexus, regardless of the type of Chart you are creating, you must distinguish the Row Type you are adding to your Chart. You have the option of choosing between “Date” and “Category” Row Types. This specification is important when working with Shared data series, because if you aren’t careful, then sharing a data series of one Row Type to a Chart with another Row Type can get the Chart into a bad state.

Why am I getting this error message?

This error message is generated because you are attempting to share a data series from a Chart that has the “Date” Row Type to another Chart that has the “Category” Row Type.

Let’s take a look at a few examples. Here we have two Charts:

  • Control Chart

  • Scrap by Process

If we open up the “Control Chart”, we can see along the left side of the table that the Row Type on this Chart is “Date”.

If we open up the “Scrap by Process”, we can see along the left side of the table that the Row Type on this Chart is “Category”.

Let’s say we want to share a series from the “Control Chart” to appear on the “Scrap by Process” Chart.

Check the box next to “Shared Series” to reference the “Control Chart” and specify the series you want to share to the “Scrap by Process” Chart.

If we attempt to add a shared data series from the “Control Chart” (Date Row Type) to the “Scrap by Process” (Category Row Type) Chart, then we will get the following error message.

This means you are trying to share a data series with Date values for each Row to a Chart that has Category values for each Row. The Chart will not know what Category to assign these Dates to so the Chart cannot be created properly.

How do I fix this error?

To fix this error, all you will need to do is make sure that the two Charts you are sharing data series between have the same Row Type.

In the example above, we would need to

EITHER:

Change the Row Type on “Control Chart” from “Date” to “Category” to match the “Scrap by Process” Chart.

OR:

Change the Row Type on “Process Chart” from “Category” to “Date” to match the “Control Chart”.

Doing either of these methods should allow you to properly share the data series and create the Chart without getting it into a bad state.

Why am I getting this error message?

This error message is generated because you are trying to switch the Row Type on a Chart from “Date” to “Category” when there is a shared series being pulled from another Chart with the Row Type already set as “Date”. You are trying to assign the data values to a “Category” for each Row, but the Chart is pulling data from another Chart which is using Dates and therefore cannot be assigned a Category.

Let’s take a look at this example. Here we have two Charts:

  • Employee Sat Scores - Houston

  • Employee Sat Scores - Austin

Both of these Charts have a matching Row Type of “Dates”, which means we can properly share a data series from one Chart to the other.

Let’s say we want to share a series from the “Employee Sat Scores - Austin” to appear on the “Employee Sat Scores - Houston” Chart.

Check the box next to “Shared Series” to reference the “Employee Sat Scores - Austin” Chart and specify the series you want to share to the “Employee Sat Scores - Houston” Chart.

Since both of these series are of the same Row Type, then we will have no problem sharing this series to this Chart. However, if we now try to change the Row Type on the “Employee Sat Scores - Houston” Chart from “Dates” to “Category”, then we could potentially make things messy.

After switching from “Dates” to “Category” Row Type, you will notice that the Chart wants you to enter in values for each Row.

If we attempt to save the Chart after filling out each Row, then we will get the following error message.

This is because we shared that series from the “Employee Sat Scores - Austin” Chart which has the “Dates” Row Type and because we cannot assign Categories when the shared series already has Date values then the Chart cannot be created properly.

How do I fix this error?

To fix this error, all you will need to do is make sure that the two Charts you are sharing data series between have the same Row Type. So if you wanted to change the Row Types on the Charts from “Dates” to “Category” then you would need to make sure to do that for both Charts before you share the series.

In the example above, we would need to

  • Remove the Shared series from the “Employee Sat Scores - Houston” Chart.

  • Change the Row Type on the “Employee Sat Scores - Houston” Chart from “Dates” to “Category”

  • Assign the Categories for each Row and then Save this Chart.

  • Edit the “Employee Sat Scores - Austin” Chart

  • Change the Row Type on the “Employee Sat Scores - Austin” Chart from “Dates” to “Category”

  • Assign the Categories for each Row and then Save this Chart.

  • Go back to the “Employee Sat Scores - Houston” Chart and share the series properly.
