Standard Layout vs. Custom Layout Templates

NOTE: Reach out to your Customer Experience Lead for any sort of adjustments needed for your Templates.

When working with your Items in KaiNexus, you have a lot of flexibility and customization options when it comes to designing the layout of your Templates. Changing your Templates’ layout allows you to better organize and visualize how the information is displayed when a User is viewing an Item of that Template Type.

What does a Template consist of?

To help understand a bit more about Templates within KaiNexus, let’s identify the components that make up a Template.

The Work Panel / Detail View

A Template’s Work Panel or Detail View is what you see when opening up an Item of that Template Type.

Panels

Panels are the rectangular boxes that contain the information on your Templates. These can display and organize any information that should be captured within the Item. Panels can come in various sizes

If you have permission to edit an Item, you can click on the in the top right corner of the Panel to edit any of the Fields and/or Attributes within that Panel. You can also edit an individual Field/Attribute using the Single Field Editing functionality.

Fields and Attributes

Fields and Attributes displayed within your Template’s panels are where you may update an Item’s information. There are lots of customization options available when it comes to designing the content and design of the Fields and Attributes that appear on your Templates. Check out these support pages for more information on the type of Fields and Attributes available, respectively.

What is the difference between Standard and Custom Layout Templates?

By default, a Template organizes the information in a Standard Layout. A Standard Layout Template consists of the same design of Panels on the Work Panel.

Standard Layout

A Standard Layout will feature the same panels being displayed in a two-column layout. Beginning from left to right and working our way down, a Standard Layout Template design will include:

  • Details Panel
This will be titled “Details of Template Name”. This panel will include and display all of the Fields and Attributes that have been added to your Template.

NOTE: You still have the option of customizing the order and design of how the Fields and Attributes on your Template are being displayed within this Details Panel, even on a Standard Layout Template.

  • Team Panel
This will be titled “Team.” This panel will include and display all of the KaiNexus Users that have been added as a member of the Item’s Team. Depending on the Template’s Workflow Type, there will be different Team Member Roles available. Check out the following pages for more information on the Team of each Workflow.

  • Comments Panel
This will be titled “Comments.” This panel will include and display any and all comments that have been left by KaiNexus Users that have chosen to do so within the Item. This allows for a channel for communication and collaboration within an Item. Check out this support page for more information on Item Comments.

Custom Layout

A Custom Layout Template design can drastically differ from the Standard Layout, giving you the ability to adjust the layout to fit your unique needs. The Standard Layout panels and optional panels can be reordered, resized, and renamed. You have the option of including more than two columns of panels in the layout. In addition, there are some other benefits of using a Custom Layout design, including:

  • Multiple Details Panels
You can title these panels freely and separate the Fields and Attributes on your Template into more than one panel.

  • Combined Nested Item List Panel
This panel can include multiple different types of Workflows of Items nested underneath the Item you are currently viewing. For example, you can have a single list of both Projects and Improvements that are nested within the Item.
