Chart Annotations

With the new Chart Annotations, users can add notes and link items to specific data points on their Bar/Line, Pareto, and Threshold Charts.

This enables you to draw parallels between improvements and KPIs by giving context to your data points and telling the story behind the data.

What happens if I add a link to an Annotation?

When you add a link to an Annotation, the item linked will not be listed in the Chart’s “Links” section.

However, the Chart will be listed in that item’s “Links” section. That listing cannot be edited or deleted unless the original link is removed from the Annotation.

How do I see Annotations that have already been added to the Chart?

An annotated data point will be signified with a colored marker. Hovering over that data point will reveal a tooltip containing a summary of its Annotations.

If there are more than 6 Annotations on a particular data point, the tooltip will prompt you to click the data point to see the full list.

You can also see a complete list of all Annotations that are on the Chart. To do so:

  • Click 2018-03-28_1631.png in the top right corner of the Chart section.

  • In the resulting drop-down menu, click 2018-10-04_1245.png.

Show_Annotations.jpg

This will open a list of all Annotations, detailing the date or category (depending on which your Chart uses) and series to which each Annotation is tied, and the item link or note included on each Annotation.

If an Annotation includes a link, you can click the name of the linked item from this window to open that item.

Who can edit a Chart or work with its Annotations?

  • Any of the Authors

  • Anyone with the "Chart Administrator" permission

How can I configure the appearance of the Annotations?

You can customize each data series on a Chart to give its Annotation markers a unique color. To do so, navigate to the Chart with which you want to work, then:

  • Click 2018-10-04_1235.png in the top right corner of the page.

  • Click 2018-10-04_1234.png in the resulting drop-down menu.

In the resulting window:

  • Make sure you have the “Data” tab open.

  • Click 2018-10-04_1237.png next to the name of the series with which you want to work.

In the resulting “Edit Series” window:

  • If the “Annotation Appearance” section is collapsed, click 2018-10-04_1240.png to its left to expand it.

  • Click inside the color code field to open the color picker.

  • Click the color that should be used to signify an Annotation, then click 2018-10-04_1240.png on the color picker.

  • Click 2018-10-04_1240.png on the “Edit Series” window to finalize your changes.

Repeat this process for any other series on the Chart as needed, then click 2018-10-04_1240.png to update the Chart.

How do I add a new Annotation?
There are two ways to add a new Annotation:

1) Find the data point on the Chart to which you want to add an Annotation, and click it.

  • Any Annotations already associated with that data point will be listed in the resulting window. Click 2018-10-04_1251.png in the top right corner.

  • In the resulting “Add Annotation” window:

    • If you want to link an item, add it to the “Item” field. You can only add one item per Annotation, so if you want to link multiple items to a particular data point, you’ll need to add multiple Annotations.

    • If you want to add a comment to this data point, enter it in the “Note” field.

    • Click 2018-10-04_1240.png to create the Annotation.

  • You can either add additional Annotations to this data point or close its Annotation window.

2) Click 2018-03-28_1631.png in the top right corner of the Chart section.

  • In the resulting drop-down menu, click 2018-10-04_1245.png.

    • If you want to add a comment, enter it in the “Note” field.

    • You must choose to which series this Annotation will be added in the “Series” field.

Once you’ve chosen the series, you must choose to which date or category (depending on which the Chart uses) this Annotation will be added in the “Date” or “Category” field.

The intersection of the series and date/category determines the data point for this Annotation.

    • Click 2018-10-04_1240.png to create the Annotation.

  • You can either add additional Annotations or close the Annotation window.

The creation of a new Annotation will be listed in the timeline.

Annotations on Chart Cards on a Board

If you have Chart Card on a Board, you can work with Annotations directly from the Card itself without having to first expand the Chart.

Click on the data point with which you want to work and its Annotations window will open. From there, you can add, edit, or delete Annotations as detailed above.
