AdHoc Fields

Many of our customers utilize the 5 Whys technique to analyze the cause-and-effect relationships underlying a particular problem they're trying to solve. Although the technique is called "5 Whys," most people use however many "Whys" are necessary regardless of whether that's less than, greater than, or exactly equal to 5, which means it used to be tricky to support this technique in KaiNexus - you never knew how many "Why" fields you needed to include on a particular Improvement template.

Other customers want to be able to create a field arranged like a grid without their people having to enter the markdown formatting themselves.

With the AdHoc field type, you can do both!

How can an AdHoc field be customized on a template?

Your Customer Experience Lead can give you a ton of control over the AdHoc fields on your templates. You can:

  • Pick the number of columns.

  • Label each column.

  • Control the width of each column.

  • Decide the rows' labels:

    • None - The rows will not be labeled.

    • Numeric - The rows will automatically be numbered starting at "1."

    • Fixed text with a row number - You'll pick some fixed text (e.g. "Why") that will be listed alongside the row number (starting at "1") for each row. In this example, your first row would be called "Why 1," the second would be "Why 2," and so on.

    • Fixed text - You'll pick some fixed text (e.g. "Why") that will be listed on each row.

    • Open text - People creating an item of this type will be able to enter their own row labels.

  • Choose how many rows will be added each time a person clicks "Add Row" when creating an item of this type. You can pick any value between 1-6.


Working with AdHoc fields

When working with an AdHoc field, there are a few things you need to know:

  • Your AdHoc field may have a different number of columns depending on the settings your organization has configured.

  • If you need to add more rows, click "Add Row" located beneath the AdHoc field. 1-6 rows will be added, depending on how your organization configured this field.


  • If you want to delete a row, hover over it so that it is highlighted blue and click 2017-08-22_1505.png to its right.

  • When you edit a cell on the AdHoc field, it will be marked with a red triangle in its top left corner. This is merely a temporary marker and will disappear when you save or discard your changes.


Exporting an item with an AdHoc field

If you export items with AdHoc fields as an Excel document, the AdHoc fields will be included in a new tab called "[Template name] - AdHoc Field." 

Likewise, if you export a list of items of different types with AdHoc fields as an Excel document, each template will have its own "AdHoc Field" template.
