Can Authors edit their own Items?

A quick guide to Author permissions on their submissions.

Can Authors edit their own Items?

Yes. Authors can edit the details of the Items they submit, including updating Fields and Attributes.

Exception: Capture Users cannot edit Items they submit.

Permissions vary by Team Type and Template

While Authors (who are not Capture Users) can always edit Item details, other actions—like completing the Item or submitting its Resolution—depend on the Team Type and Template configuration.

For example:

  • Authors cannot complete a Standard or Simple Team Item if a Resolution is required.

  • However, Templates with the "Anyone Can Complete" setting enabled can allow Authors to complete these Items.

If you'd like to dive into the specifics of what permissions Authors have on their Items, see our support pages for:

Ofie Profile PicPro Tip: Remember that permissions can also come from a user’s System Role, which may grant access beyond their Team Role.

Preventing Authors from Editing their Items

If you want to restrict Authors from editing their own Items, you have two main options:

  • Give the user the Capture User Type. This method would only work if the person only needs to use KaiNexus to submit Items and doesn't need to view Boards or work with existing Items.
  • Change the Author to a Follower after submission.
