Improvement charts

The charts feature is a great tool for keeping track of things you need to measure. After all, in order to know how effective your improvement work is, you need to know what your impact is.

 

This is the type of information that you traditionally track in Excel, Word documents, posters on the wall, etc. By storing this information in KaiNexus, you keep your data in the same place as your improvement work. That way, everyone can see the progress that you’re making, and you have a single source of truth for verifying your impact.

For example:

  • Your Improvement is about reducing the amount of supplies used in your department. You can use the Charts tab to keep track of what you’re using, so that when it comes time to log your resolution, you’ll know for sure what your impact was.

  • Or maybe your Project is about increasing your number of customers. Using this feature allows you to monitor how many new customers you bring in.


Who can add, edit, or delete charts?

  • Responsible person

  • Assigner

  • Authors

  • Collaborators

 

How do I add a new chart to an Improvement?

  • Open the Improvement.

  • Click the Charts tab.

  • Click  in the top right corner of the Charts section.

In the resulting window, you can either:

 

1) Associate an existing chart with this Improvement.

  • Begin typing the name of the chart in the "Associate Existing" field.

  • Click the name of the chart you want to add.

  • Repeat until you've listed all the charts you want to add.

 

2) Create a new chart.

NOTE: If you create a new chart, you will become its Owner.

  • Click 

 

In the resulting window:



  • Enter the title of your new chart.

  • Make sure you're in the "Data" tab

Your Chart will automatically be set with the horizontal axis divided by date. If you want to change this to categories:



  • Click  next to "Date."

  • Choose "Category" in the resulting window.

Categories can be arranged in whatever order you want. Drag and drop the rows into the correct order.

Pro Tip: You can also click and drag columns into whatever order you want.


To customize the chart's axes or make it private:



  • Click .


In the resulting window, you can:




  • Edit the chart’s title.

  • Enter a description of the chart.

  • Make the chart private - so that it is only accessible by members of its team - by checking the box next to “Make Private?”

  • Give the X-Axis a title that will be displayed below the horizontal axis.

  • Give the Left Y-Axis a title that will be displayed alongside the left vertical axis. You can also add a minimum and maximum range.

  • Give the Right Y-Axis a title that will be displayed alongside the right vertical axis. You can also add a minimum and maximum range.

  • Click .

 

 

Next, add a new series:



  • Click .

 

In the resulting window:



  • Enter a title.

  • (**Optional**) Enter a description.

  • Choose whether the series will be displayed as a line or bar.

    Pro Tip: The same Chart can have data series of both types.
    • If you chose a line graph, you will be asked if you want to show or hide the markers. If you choose "show," each data point will be marked with a small dot on the chart.

  • Choose which vertical axis the series will follow. The left and right axes can be scaled differently. This is useful if, for example, you want to create a Pareto Chart - a bar Chart with a cumulative percentage line. The bar(s) can be assigned to one axis and the line assigned to the other.

  • Choose a color.

You can add as many data series as you want to the Chart – just keep repeating the previous step until you’re satisfied.

 

Once you're done adding series, add rows to your chart:



  • Click  

    NOTE: this button will not appear until you have added at least one series.

In the resulting window:



  • If you're working with dates, enter a start date, an end date, and a step unit (day, week, or month). This will determine how many rows are added.

    If you're working with categories, enter the number of rows you want to add.

 

If you just need to add a single row (or multiple rows, one at a time), click  at the bottom of the chart window. 

 

Rows of dates are arranged in order from oldest to most recent.


Rows of categories can be arranged in whatever order you want. Drag and drop the rows into the order you want.

 

Next, add data:



  • Add a single data point: Click on the appropriate column and row intersection, then enter the value. 

  • Copy an entire column of data from an Excel spreadsheet:

    • Go to the spreadsheet containing your data.

    • Select an entire column of data - except for any headings. Click "Copy" or hit ctrl+c to copy it.

    • Go back to the Chart window in KaiNexus and click in the first data box in the corresponding column.

    • Either right-click and choose "Paste" or type ctrl+v to paste the data.

    • Repeat these steps as many times as necessary to copy each column of data into KaiNexus.

To edit or delete a data series:

  • Click next to its name.

  • Either edit the information for that series or click  to remove it from the Chart entirely.

 

How do I edit an existing chart?

  • Open the Improvement.

  • Click the "Charts" tab.



  • Hover over the chart you want to edit so that it's highlighted blue.

  • In the resulting window, click in the action bar. You’ll then be able to:

    • Add a new data series by following the steps detailed above.

    • Add data points to your series, by adding a new row as detailed above.

    • Edit or delete a data series as detailed above.

    • Customize the chart and axes titles and ranges by opening the “Options” menu as detailed above.

  • Click .

 

 

How do I export my chart's data to Excel?

  • Open any chart in KaiNexus.



  • Click in the action bar.

 

How do I remove a chart from an Improvement?

  • Open the Improvement.

  • Open the “Charts” tab.



  • Hover over the chart you want to edit so that it's highlighted blue.

  • Click next to that chart.

 

 

How do I fully delete a chart from KaiNexus?

NOTE: When you delete a chart, it is removed from all Improvements and Projects, and any Cards that reference it will be deleted. The chart’s team will be immediately notified. This action cannot be undone.

  • Open the chart.

  • Click in the action bar.

  • Click .

  • Enter a reason for deleting the chart and check the box next to “I understand that this can not be undone.”

  • Click .
